Students in the UK are fortunate to have the Skillset Screen Academy Wales and Skillset Academi+, which have lead the way, guiding their students toward sources of Transmedia production theories and practice in the UK and Europe.

"Each year I’m emailed by prospective students asking for information about universities in the USA and Europe that would be good for studying transmedia at the undergraduate or post-graduate level. Of course, the research approach you intend to use (are you researching narrative, game, interaction, marketing, media, art, and/or so on?) influences the choice; and one can study this area in just about every department at the post-graduate level. But attending universities with academics that are already familiar with the area would be a great help."

Calling young filmmakers -- Get your film screened at Glastonbury Festival!!!

The Village Screen project, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, is looking for a mix of inspiring, funny, original and challenging films from young filmmakers, aged 12 to 24, to show on our big screens (25 metres squared) at the Glastonbury Festival, Wednesday 23–Sunday 27 June 2010.

We are looking for films in the following categories:

Welcome the World – an open call for silent films with a purely visual narrative, celebrating the values of the Olympic Games: Friendship, Courage, Determination, Excellence, Equality, Respect and Inspiration

Hug the Planet – supported by Natural England, in the International Year of Biodiversity, an open call for films with a strong visual narrative (not reliant on dialogue to get your story across), focussing on creative and innovative approaches to the five themes of sustainability in the natural world: Biodiversity, Climate Change, Healthy Living, Inclusion, Waste

One filmmaker in each category will be chosen to receive a pair of tickets to attend the 2010 Glastonbury Festival (Wednesday 23–Sunday 27 June).

Films should be submitted in DVD format and should be accompanied by a completed submissions/permissions form (downloadable here) by Tuesday 4th May 2010 to:

Neither the Village Screen project nor the Watershed can take responsibility for undelivered or lost content and recommends that “master copies” should not be sent under any circumstances.

Neither the Village Screen project nor the Watershed can commit to returning DVDs but will ensure that film-makers whose work is accepted for screening are informed;

Films can be made in any genre (animation; black and white; drama; documentary etc);

Filmmakers should avoid including commercial branding within the body of their films and, under no account, can include the names, brands or logos of commercial sponsors in the title sequences of their films;

Films can be made and submitted by individuals; small groups; or whole classes;

While we encourage entrants to improve their skills and seek the guidance of more experienced film-makers, we expect the creative ideas, content, camera work and editing to be the work of young film-makers;

To ensure those chosen to receive a pair of free tickets get them in good time, we will ask for the contact details of both prospective recipients in advance (on the submissions/permissions form); without this information we cannot consider you for tickets, though your film will still be considered for screening;

Those receiving free tickets will be expected to comply with the full list of terms and conditions issued by Glastonbury Festival (which will be sent to you with your ticket), but please note now that:

tickets are strictly non-transferable;
all under 16s must be accompanied by an adult;
ticket holders will be expected to bring and carry photo id at all times

• The decisions of the selection panel, ratified by the organisers of the Village Screen project, will be considered final.

Openfilm - where creativity meets opportunity

First Quarter submissions now open!

Openfilm will accept submissions throughout the year to the quarterly competitions; see the competition schedule for specific dates. There is a non-refundable $35 submission fee. Openfilm reserves the right to use still images and show short clips of any submitted films to promote the competition.

Be sure your network knows to vote for you!

July 1 – 31, 2010
To equalize the process, submitted entries are viewable from the time that they are entered into the competition, but all films will be voted on during the same time period. The top six films by vote will be presented to the advisory board.
August 2010
The Advisory Board will view the top six finalists, and as a group they will select one winner. All finalists will receive feedback on their work.
September 2010
The quarterly winner will be announced publicly within one month of the Advisory Board’s decision. Openfilm will contact the winner prior to a public announcement.

$50,000 cash and a
$200,000 financing contract
Criteria
A live-action or animation that is 40 minutes or less, and based on a feature length concept.

Whether you're a film maker or a film lover, there are loads of ways to get involved.

If you're a film maker...
Virgin Media Shorts gives you the chance to show your work in cinemas, on TV, online and on mobiles (via the mobile internet).Here's what's up for grabs:

12 film makers win a chance to show their work on 214 cinema screens nationwide

1 lucky winner lands £30,000 to make their next film.

1 People's Choice winner takes home thousands of pounds worth of new film kit.

Plus, we reward the college or school with the most entrants with loads of shiny new kit, too.

Entering is easy. Just check out the film spec. Then upload your film. The competition closes on 28 June 2010.

About Virgin Media Shorts

Here's what happens, stage by stage:

Initial stage

1. Submit your film (Your film can be up to 2 min 20 seconds) between 12 April and until noon on 28 June 2010 online at virginmediashorts.co.uk.

2. You'll need to agree to the competition terms and conditions before submitting your work. Check the required file format and film criteria within our Film Specification guide.

3. We'll look to showcase all the competition entries on the website.
Second stage - long list

4. Next, we'll long list a number of films. If you're one of them, we'll let you know and you'll need to provide your work in its highest quality, as set out in the Film Spec, by 15 July. We will also double-check your film clearances at this point, too. You will need to have your rights forms (actors, locations and music) ready at this point to progress in the competition.

Third stage - final shortlist

5. This bit is all about getting your work on the big screen in hundreds of cinemas nationwide. In the final stage, we'll select 12 films to contend for the Grand Prize. Each of the 12 films will be transferred to 35mm print and shown on 214 cinema screens in the UK, ready to be watched by millions of cinema-goers across the country. If selected, your film will be on the big screen for 12 months, starting in September, so its important that your original film master can be transferred technically and cinematically to the cinema screen.

6. We may also show your short film:

On TV
On TV on Demand, alongside 500 blockbuster films
On mobile phones or handheld devices
On the internet, both through internet TV and by downloading it from the site
Other places we think you might benefit from extra exposure
Fourth stage - Awards (Prizes)

7. There will be two prize-winners picked from the 12 films:

The Peoples Choice

We'll give power to the people, and ask the great British public to vote for their favourite film of the 12 shortlisted online. Get your friends and families behind you or simply let your work speak for itself!

The Grand Prize

A panel of judges, including industry experts, actors and directors will select one film maker from the 12 shortlisted to win the Grand Prize. That's the winner of £30,000 film funding and the chance to work with the UK Film Council and Virgin Media to make a short film.
The razzle dazzle awards ceremony

Of course, no competition would be complete without the glitz and glamour of an award ceremony. Ours will take place mid October 2010 in London and well announce the winners then. Start planning your red carpet arrival right away!

Final stage - winners, claim your prize

8. If you were the Peoples Choice, we'll contact you after the Awards Ceremony to arrange your prize.

9. If you won the Grand Prize, Virgin Media and the UK Film Council will get in touch to sort out funding and help you work out your next idea.

An interesting blog for assistant film editors is at Post Production Standards.

It looks to be a good place for standardizing editorial practices and sharing ideas. And its not just for assistants.

The LA Film School sponsored a seminar on editing in early 2007, hosted by Joe Byron. The panel included editors Stuart Bass, A.C.E., Tchavdar Georgiev, and Stephen Rivkin, A.C.E. along with assistant editors Andrew Charlton, Meagan Keane, and Alan McCurdy.

It was moderated by Harry Miller, A.C.E.

Topics include how each got into the film business, collaboration in the edit suite, creativity and the use of technology, and finally a Q&A with the students.

The series is posted on the web site Digital Content Producer, from the publishers Millimeter magazine.

eDIT The Filmmaker’s Festival features top international speakers

eDIT The Filmmaker's Festival is an international platform for filmmakers from all disciplines of film production to meet and share ideas about how to make good films. After all, working in film means working as a team.

The Festival partners with the editors’ association A.C.E. and the European Federation of Cinematographers IMAGO to present a state of the art program around the creation of moving image as contemporary storytelling.

eDIT The Filmmaker’s Festival features top international speakers to present their work. The festival program focuses on visual effects, animation, cinematography, editing and production for cinema, television and advertising.

The Festival is visited by film-professionals from all areas with an emphasis on digital media and production techniques.

Altogether, the events of eDIT The Filmmaker's Festival register about 7.000 visitors annually, including about 30% students.

As in the past, eDIT: eDucation continues to provide an important service to pupils and students.

Festival screenings are catering to the public's interest in new international films.

The “Best of Festivals” series is used to showcase productions that are not commonly seen in German cinemas despite having received acclaim at international festivals.

The highlight of the festivities is the festival gala where outstanding filmmakers are presented with festival honors in front of a crowd of 800 invited celebrity guests from the film industry and society.

Also the extraordinary cultural program (featuring the likes of Grace Jones, William Forsythe, Nina Hagen, Branford Marsalis or Helen Schneider) makes the opening gala a highlight amongst the events of the fall.

The festival party or lounge marks the middle evening of eDIT The Filmmaker's Festival. It is the place to be for networking, entertainment, fun.

eDward is the international young filmmakers award of the eDIT The Filmmaker's Festival. An acclaimed international jury chooses the best 30-second-film on a given subject.

All filmmakers up to 30 years of age can participate.

With the State of Hessen, the City of Frankfurt and the Office for public broadcasting and new media in Hessen public bodies are funding eDIT The Filmmaker's Festival, enabling it to be an independent event, free of economic interest and obligations other than the pure commitment to the art and science of the moving image.

"Cannes only takes six short films into competition a year, so don’t waste your time or money unless you’ve got the backing of a federal or provincial agency who will push your film through the ranks.

Sundance and Tribeca celebrate American independent cinema so, again, unless you’ve got some big backing, save your money.

Toronto only programs Canadian short films, so by all means, submit.

After that a good list to study is the list of Oscar® recognized festivals which would be the ideal ones to submit to in your first year."

Young Welsh filmmakers take Glastonbury Music Festival 2009 by storm

Seventeen films made by young and emerging filmmakers from across Wales have been selected to be shown at this years Glastonbury music festival.

The "Village Screen" has been developed by the London 2012 Creative programmers as a way of providing a new platform for emerging filmmakers to show their work.

Over 85 hours of film from across the UK regions and Nations will be shown over five days [Wednesday the 24th to Sunday 28th June] and will be a wonderful way of engaging large audiences with London 2012 and the Cultural Olympiad.

The seventeen films selected from Wales include animation, documentary and live action films made by young people aged 8-18, a range of student films, professional short films and some low budget features.

The Welsh films will be broadcast on a huge 25m2 double-sided screen at the "meeting point" [one of the busiest junctions on site] on Saturday, ensuring every one of the 350,000 people at the festival will have the films in view.

Cardiff ATRiuM: FREE Admission to live theatre performances begins 23 March 2009

Once again, the Cardiff ATRiuM makes news when the enormous crowd of new actors takes to the stage!

It's only the second year that the CCI Faculty has been in their new ARTS & MEDIA facility, the ATRiuM, located in the heart of the Welsh Capital City Cardiff, but already the ATRiuM has become a regional hub for performance studies related events.

My dear and esteemed colleague Professor Steve Blandford writes to us:

Dear all

On behalf of my colleagues I would like to invite you to come to at least one of the theatre shows that our final year students will be presenting all week, starting 23rd March. A PDF of the poster (designed by the fantastic Gareth Hughes) is attached.

Just as the art and design degree shows, film screenings, radio broadcasts, dissertations, music performances etc are the climax of their studies for many of your students these shows are the equivalent for those working in live theatre performance. It is always very much appreciated by the students (and us) if colleagues can find time in their busy schedules to support them.

As you will see there are 14 shows in all spread across the week. They are free, most are under an hour (and only fractionally longer in one or two cases) and therefore it is reasonably easy to fit one in.

Like all student work the standard varies, though unlike most written work these are open to very public scrutiny! Some times the work is outstanding and takes on a life beyond University.

One show from last year is still touring professionally and was taken up as a performance for schools and young people by Bridgend Local Authority as part of its response to the tragic events in the area over the last two years.

A date for your diaries

The 1st of April 2009 marks the centenary of the birth of the writer and pioneer oral historian George Ewart Evans. His name is eponymous to the Centre for Storytelling here in CCI. George was born in Abercynon but completed most of his seminal work in Suffolk.

The gathering here in Atrium on the 1st of April will bring together significant figures to consider his life, his work and his legacy..

These will include his son the former Faber and Faber Chairman Matthew Evans, David Gentleman the artist, Colin Thomas the film-maker our colleague the historian Gareth Williams who is Evans’s biographer.

If you know about Evans’s work come and join us in celebrating, if you don’t come and learn more about the man and his work from those that knew, read and have been influenced by him . . .

Learning About Deal-Making in the International Audiovisual Industry

8th Annual Miami Short Film Festival

For a lot of students who desire to become producers, there's got to be a shock when first exposed to the 'legalese' speak of entertainment lawyers and barristers.

Recently I needed to shift gears: I thought I would be developing a new feature film this year, but the worldwide credit crunch put that on hold for the time being.

But I had already started trading with my new company, and I needed to find ways to develop cash flow.

In a report on filmmaking by the British Council last year, and emphasis was made on developing 'diversified revenue streams' for small producers to stay afloat.

The projected areas of growth included New Media and international co-productions:

The UK Association of Independent Film Producers (PACT) supports the decision of our company to ‘diversify’ our ‘revenue streams’, and not only to rely upon feature film production:

“The call to arms for independents is you better start growing those other revenue streams,” said Oliver. “You’ve got to look at what your share of revenue is from secondary and new media exploitation and if that’s sufficient. That means a shift in business focus to maintain momentum.” (PACT 2008a: 7)

This year, for example, both new media revenues and international revenues were down. Over the last three years, though, both areas have shown significant growth, and as revenues from UK primary commissions begin to level out, both markets are going to be key to the continued growth of the sector. (PACT 2008a)

We have already 'diversified' and we're going after production contracts in specialty 'niche market' areas, which other market research tells us might be a better bet to 'weather out' the global credit slow down for feature films.

Either way, I found myself having to know an awful lot recently about U.S. financing, as well as international co-production treaties and contract details.

I found that a course I took at the Miami School of Entertainment Technology when I was doing the Associate of Science program in Film Production Technology really came in handy, so thanks Prof. James, where ever you are right now.

Following the official launch of

The Music Academy

a collaboration between the University of Glamorgan and Roland UK in April 2008, it is now my great pleasure to inform you about the first in our ongoing programme of one day taster courses, which will be running at the University's brand new

ATRiuM

campus in Adam Street, Cardiff during July.

These programmes represent an important development in our course portfolio as they are delivered by leading industry professionals from Roland UK.

Exploring Synthesisers with Roland Technology

This course provides an examination of how synthesisers such as the Roland SH201, Fantom G and V-Synth are used as creative tools in composition and performance.

This course will explain how a synthesiser works and will reveal the true potential for developing a unique and original sound. All course attendees will receive a certificate of attendance endorsed by The Music Academy following completion of the day.

Course Start Date: Saturday 19th July 2008

Course Cost: £85 (£50*) - Including refreshments during the day.

Course Duration: 10.00am - 4.00pm (1 day course)

Welcome to the world of V-drums

This exciting course looks at getting to know a set of Roland V-drums and how to unlock their full creative potential.

The day will also look at how the V-drum kit can be combined with other percussion devices, such as the SPDS percussion sampler and the Handsonic.

Course Start Date: Saturday 26th July 2008

Course Cost: £85 (£50*) - Including refreshments during the day.

Course Duration: 10.00am - 4.00pm (1 Day course)

For those who are interested in both enjoying music whilst also gaining credits towards an HE qualification, The Music Academy is now starting its programme of accredited short courses with the first module in Music Theory starting on the 6th August.

Music Theory

This 10 credit module acts as an introduction to popular music theory, and is intended to assist the comprehension of related disciplines such as ensemble based music reading, composition, arrangement, and aural/listening skills.

It therefore provides the theoretical foundation for the FDSC in Creative Industries (Roland Popular Music Technology), and it is therefore recommended that it is studied early if pursuing the programme on a modular/part time basis.

The programme is invaluable for students who are simply interested in improving their music theory, and can therefore be studied successfully as a stand alone unit.

The course costs £150, will start on the 6th August 2008, and is run over 10 consecutive Wednesdays between 7pm - 9pm at the ATRiuM

The symposium will bring together academics and industry practitioners.

The keynote speaker will be GARRY WHANNEL, Professor of Media Cultures at Bedfordshire University

Dr. GLEN CREEBER of Aberystwyth University will respond to his address.

The second part of the symposium will comprise a moderated panel discussion, to include questions from the floor. Garry and Glen will be joined by DOMINIC TOLFTS, production designer on a wide range of light entertainment programmes including Britain's Got Talent, Celebrity Love Island and Mr and Mrs (the 'new' version) and by JOHN MEAD, a former television presenter and an experienced producer-director for HTV and the ITV network.

John has devised, produced and directed a number of television game shows, including All in the Game, A Question of Stars, Cuckoo in the Nest and About Face. Details of most of these will be found on UKGameShows.com

Hi all, just to let you know that the Create ’08 end of year show website is now live for all to enjoy at

The site now includes as much of the student work as possible, based on what has been supplied thus far and as of next week, will also feature work from the animation and computer animation courses.

There is however no doubt that there is far more work out there which could be included on the site.

If anybody would like their students work to be included, can they please send a disk with individually marked folders containing any images the students name, course title and any quote from the student about the work to David Massey in Marketing & Student Recruitment (I will be on leave over the next week).

I'm so proud of my socially 'activist' film & media students, especially Luke Todd and his friends who are organizing for OXFAM in Cardiff.

Here's what Luke wrote to say:

I would be grateful if you could help promote the following event which takes place on Monday evening:

Oxjam Cardiff Chill returns for its third festival in the capital city.

This year’s festival will be taking place in Glo Bar, Churchill Way (just off Queen Street, Cardiff city centre) on Monday 28th April 2008 at 10pm. Entry costs £3 on the door

The night will feature bands including Rachel Taylor-Beales and Two StrungOut. There will also be a raffle.

All money raised from the event will go to Oxfam.

Today ATRiuM Intelligent Media: AIM salutes a University of Glamorgan student named Kirsty Davies.

From time to time we feature interviews or stories about students in this international online forum, who have overcome obstacles, displayed incredible enthusiasm about learning and growing, or who have work hard to create excellence in their lives.

In our opinion Kirsty Davies is a career-oriented mother and mature student who has done all of these. Kirsty is a second year Philosophy commuter student is Treforest, and she also volunteers each week to work in the office of a Welsh Assembly Government minister.

And as if that’s wasn’t enough, now her deep sense of social justice and commitment to her local community has motivated her to run as a Lib Dem candidate for the local council in Llandaf, a suburb of the Cardiff, the capital city of Wales.

We couldn’t be any prouder of this student, and without favoring any political view, we thought it was important to tell this Welsh Super Mom in public, ‘Well done!’ (And ‘Good Luck’ Kirsty, with the upcoming election!)

Questionnaire:

1. Where were you born, grow up, went to school? Is born in Cardiff, grew up in Llandaff and went to school there.

2. Where have you traveled? I haven’t traveled that much, I miss my home but I have been to Yugoslavia, Vienna, Italy, Spain, Germany and this year I am going to America to my brothers wedding.

3. What are you studying? (UK, Europe, etc.?) I am studying at the University of Glamorgan, Wales, UK

4. What is your age? I am 32

5. What music do you like? I like all sorts of music, classical, rock, pop, lately I'm into Morrissey.

6. Who are your heroes? Men/women, real / fictional; Hmmm, hard one, Gandhi definitely, David Lloyd George, Kirsty Williams (Lib Dem AM) because she has the family, the politics, the job, and is still like one of us. My fictional hero is Gandalf, he is so wise!

7. What did you want to be when you grow up? A dispatch rider just like Rocky on Boon.

8. What are you currently studying? The University of Glamorgan, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Treforest campus in Pontypridd.

9. What issues concern you? local/national/world Local issues, community centre for Danescourt, better street lighting at Danescourt Station so that people feel safe at night, continued opposition to 24hr liquor licensing and tackling anti social behavior by working proactively with the kids who don’t have anything to do, identifying their interests and developing their skills. Nationally, I strongly oppose I.D cards and am passionate about the environment. Education is also an area of interest, I think its time to put education at the top of the agenda, committing more public funds to education and less on expensive white elephants like the I.D Card. Globally I am interested in peace and pray for and end to world hunger, there is no need for anyone to go hungry, it makes me sad that we still allow it.

10. Why are you running for office? Because I care about my community and our children, I care a lot that the area I live in is becoming run down through lack of facilities. I believe that I can do a lot to help my community if elected.

11. What office are you running for and where? I am running for the council in Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales.

12. Do you currently work or intern? Yes, I am currently interning for Kirsty Williams, AM.

13. Favorite color, and anything else you'd like to say: Black for clothes, red for flowers, brown (for chocolate!) and yellow, of course.

14. Pets and Hobbies? I have three cats, one who is officially mine and two who decided to move in a while ago that I never got round to chasing out. In my spare time I like to spend time with my family, read, eat out, and try to play guitar, mostly unsuccessfully.

Cardiff ATRiuM 'Rocks Out' This Weekend with Battle of the Bands, Roland Music Academy Launch Events April 4-5

What is The Music Academy ?

The Cardiff School of Creative a& Cultural Industries and Roland UK have come together in a strategic partnership to launch ‘The Music Academy’.

The Academy’s aim is development and delivery of world-class music education and training, both nationally and internationally.

Academic programmes will be run in association with a range of partner colleges through the national qualifications framework, and will provide students with pathways through to degree level.

Professional programmes and short courses will be available on a both part time basis, and are intended for industry professionals, practising musicians and members of the public who are seeking to develop expertise in use of Roland music technology.

Finally, real and immediate benefits accrue to current and future CCI students in the use of the latest Roland musical equipment as available through the course of their studies at the ATRiuM.

The Music Academy Launch - Friday 4th April 2008

To celebrate the launch of The Music Academy, Mr Ikutaro Kakehashi, the Founder of Roland (please see attached biography in article to follow below) will be awarded an Honorary Professorship from the University of Glamorgan at a special ceremony held in Cardiff on Friday 4th April.

The Professorship will be conferred by the University Vice-Chancellor Professor David Halton, and is in recognition of Mr Kakehashi's unique contribution to music technology.

This will be followed by Mr Kakehashi’s inaugural lecture.

We expect upwards of 150 invited guests to attend. The official opening of The Music Academy will be formalised when Mr. Kakehashi unveils a commemorative plaque following the conferment ceremony.

Battle of the Bands - Saturday 5th April 2008

To celebrate the launch of The Music Academy, CCI and Roland are running an inaugural Battle of the Bands competition.

This competition is sponsored by Rockschool. Over 60 entries were received.

The finals competition will feature 8 short-listed bands performing live before the general public and a team of industry experts.

The winning act will receive £3000 worth of Roland equipment, and there will cash prizes for the top three acts courtesy of our sponsors Rockschool.

ROCKSCHOOL

Doors Open at 11am, and the first band will be taking the stage at approximately 12pm.

In addition to the Battle of the Bands competition, the day will also feature a number of master classes and performances run by Roland UK music professionals.

Admission is FREE and all Faculty colleagues and music students are welcome to attend.

Ikutaro Kakehashi, founder of the Roland Corporation, is to be honoured in recognition of his legendary contribution to both the music industry and music education.

During his forthcoming visit to the UK, Mr Kakehashi will receive an Honorary Professorship from the University of Glamorgan at a special ceremony held in Cardiff on 4th April.

The ceremony includes Mr Kakehashi’s inaugural lecture to an invited VIP audience and coincides with the official opening of the Roland Music Academy at the University’s new multi-million pound ATRiuM facility.

Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1930, Ikutaro Kakehashi’s story is remarkable. Orphaned at the age of 2 and nearly losing his own life to tuberculosis at 20, Kakehashi began his working life repairing watches and building radios before discovering his love of music and his true vocation in 1958.

“It was 1958. I was 28 years old, and I decided I would find a way to make electronic musical instruments my life’s work.” Ikutaro Kakehashi – I Believe in Music (2002).

This led to the development of products for the music industry, including organs, which Kakehashi sold through his own company before linking up with Hammond to form Hammond Japan.

In 1972 Kakehashi founded the Roland Corporation. By this time, his impact on the music industry was already significant, but his most important contribution came in 1982 as he initiated discussions between electronic musical instrument manufacturers with a view to creating a standard method of communication.

This resulted in the MIDI specification. Over the following decades, with Kakehashi at the helm, the Roland Corporation continued to flourish. Advances in research and development made it a market leader in the production of synthesizers, organs, pianos, electronic drums, samplers, music workstations, amplifiers, and guitar effects.

The last 10 years saw further business expansion with the addition of video and visual performance products to the Roland Corporation portfolio.

At the same time, Roland’s international profile developed with the establishment of its joint venture companies worldwide and its additional investment in companies such as Boss, Rodgers, Edirol, Cakewalk, RSS and Roland DG, who are all part of the Roland family.

“Mr Kakehashi’s impact on the music industry has been colossal,” says John Booth, Managing Director of Roland UK.

“In addition to being the driving force in the design of cutting-edge music technology, he has also been influential in shaping the sound and style of music itself.

His achievements will influence generations of musicians for years to come. The award of an Honorary Professorship recognises his amazing contribution to the music industry and education.”

Cardiff ATRiuM: £1,000 Bursaries to Cannes Film Festival for Skillset Screen Academy Wales Students Deadline 31 March 2008

There are three festival bursaries of £1,000 each available to current MA Film (UWN), MA Film Producing and Business Management (UoG) and MA Moving Image (UoG) and Animation students for the Cannes Film Festival 2008.

"The festival is where the film industry meets to do business. Every year hordes of producers, directors, buyers and sellers and unknown hopefuls descend on the seaside town all eager to make the deal of a lifetime."

"Many of them will spend their time wheeling and dealing in hotel suites across Cannes, and will leave with contracts and contacts but without having seen a single film in the competition."

The bursaries are to cover accreditation, travel, accommodation and mentor expenses.

SSAW will organise the accreditation of those attending and will discuss travel and accommodation arrangements with those chosen.

The Deadline is the:

31st March. You can e-mail your application but please mark it CANNES.

For those of you who have completed films and you are wanting to submit for a place -- Then please drop those off at the Screen Academy Wales office.

PLEASE NOTE: The pitching session – where you will be required to pitch your film or a film idea to a panel of industry professionals will be Wednesday 2nd April from 11 – 4 p.m. but you will be notified of your time before the day.

Please also note that we are opening the application to graduated MA students – who graduated in the last year – so do send an application in if possible -

The George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling annual lecture and symposium takes place on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th March. This year we are holding the event in our new ATRiuM building in the centre of Cardiff.

George Ewart Evans Lecture and Reception Tuesday 18th March 2008

Professor Richard Bauman will present his keynote lecture on Tuesday evening, this will be followed by a reception and dinner in the newly opened Atrium building of the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Glamorgan.

The dinner will be followed by story and music performance by Guto Dafis.

Professor Richard Bauman The Remediation of Storytelling: Narrative Performance on Early Commercial Sound Recording
Professor Richard Bauman, Distinguished Professor and Chair in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University, has published widely on the ethnographic study of language and performance.

He has served as president of the Semiotic Society of America, the Society for Linguistic Anthropology, and the Society of Fellows of the American Folklore Society. Among many other professional activities, he has been chair of the Folklife Advisory Council of the Smithsonian Institution, editor of the Journal of American Folklore, and a member of more than 15 editorial boards.

He has also been a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Folklore Fellow of the Finnish Academy of Sciences, and twice holder of National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships.

Professor Bauman’s keynote lecture will focus on narrative and development of sound recording. The years between 1895 and 1920 represented a formative period in the commercial development of sound recording in the U.S. as nascent recording companies attempted to create a consumer market for phonograph records and the machines on which to play them.

As recording companies sought to discover what might attract consumers to purchase records, they drew heavily upon traditional performance forms, such as storytelling, oratory, and religious sermons, and upon popular entertainments, such as minstrel shows, early vaudeville, medicine shows, tent shows, and Chautauqua, all of which had proven themselves attractive to popular audiences.

The adaptation of these traditional and popular performance forms to phonograph records involves the process of remediation, specifically, the rendering of embodied, face-to-face performance forms through the mediation of another communicative technology, sound recording.

In this paper, I explore what happens when we render oral storytelling, formerly experienced live, in situations of copresence, when the immediacy of copresence is transformed into a mediated experience.

This two day symposium will examine issues raised in the keynote lecture and the implications for storytelling and authenticity. The symposium is structured around a series of keynote ‘provocations’, with maximum time allocated for debate and discussion on the issues raised.

Tale-Enders: Gathering the Narrative Heritage of Welsh Cricket Launch

We are proud to be able to launch this project which brings together the George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling and Glamorgan Cricket to explore the use of storytelling and technology to populate the new Museum of Welsh Cricket at Sophia Gardens as part of the current £9.6 million redevelopment in advance of hosting an Ashes Tests in 2009.

The launch will be followed by a free buffet lunch.

Susie Pratt and Lisa Heledd Digital Storytelling

Susie Pratt (Research Fellow, George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling) and Lisa Heledd (Capture Wales, BBC Wales and Postgraduate Researcher in Digital Storytelling, George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling) will run a digital storytelling workshop.

This session will explore the latest developments in digital storytelling and present some of the current research being carried out by members of the George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling team.

Joseph Sobol The Razor’s Edge: The American Storytelling Movement in 2008

Joseph Sobol (Associate Professor, East Tennessee State University), author of The House Between Earth and Sky: Harvesting New American Folktales and The Storytellers' Journey: An American Revival, will present a lecture and workshop exploring issues raised in the American Storytelling movement and the resonances they might have for people working in Wales and the UK.

The American Storytelling movement has matured in certain unmistakable ways—and not in others.

This mixed development has placed major stresses on the organizational base and on those working in the field.

This talk will identify some of the stresses—organizational, artistic, and economic--and suggest some avenues of potential evolution and relief.

Dick Leith “Authenticity” and “Ownership”: How to Shut People Up

Academic and storyteller Dick Leith will explore his own recollections of the 1950s and 60s folk revival in Britain and how issues raised during that period are resurfacing today.

He will examine notions of the authentic voice and questions regarding how this concept has been used both to silence and to empower. Chair: Susie Pratt (Research Fellow, George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling)

Professor Hande Birkalan Gedik Uses of Authenticity: Responsibility, Re-presentation and Re-contextualization of Folklore Performances

Professor Hande Birkalan Gedik (Associate Professor, Yeditepe University, Istanbul) will aim to bring light to the concepts of “authenticity” and “authority” in folklore performances in selective examples from Turkey.

She will be discussing these concepts primarily as a “native” woman and as a folklorist with an educational up-bringing in the American folkloristics. Chair: Joseph Sobol (Associate Professor, East Tennessee State University)

Neil Lanham 'Who is the truly educated man: The one who can grown onions or the man who can spell them?' - (George Ewart-Evans P.17 'The Horse in the Furrow 1960). A view from the onion grower's perspective

Neil Lanham was born in 1938 into a rudimentary small farm way of life. He observed early in his life that culture came from the spoken word of the indigenous vernacular people around him.

He has recorded both mentally and physically oral idioms ever since. This paper will investigate concepts of authenticity and indigenous voice. Chair: Hamish Fyfe (Co-Director, George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling and Professor of Arts in the Community)

Young people from sixth forms across South and West Wales gathered at the University of Glamorgan’s brand new ATRiuM building in Cardiff this month to celebrate the growing number of Welsh language university courses available to them in the capital.

Young people from sixth forms across South and West Wales gathered at the University of Glamorgan’s brand new ATRiuM building in Cardiff this month to celebrate the growing number of Welsh language university courses available to them in the capital.

The day during which the youngsters took part in workshops with some of Wales’ youngest creative talent, marked the announcement of Glamorgan expanding its Welsh language provision for creative industry based courses including a bilingual option for media and music courses.

Renowned young Welsh author Caryl Lewis was joined by BBC Radio Cymru presenter Daf Du during the day which saw fifty 16 and 17 year-olds take part in practical and question and answer sessions.

Schools attending included, Ysgol Gyfun y Cymer, Ysgol Gyfun Plasmawr, Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf, Ysgol Bro Myrddin and Ysgol Maes yr Yrfa.

BBC Wales series Pobol y Cwm producer Dafydd Llewelyn and Huw Meredydd Roberts a producer with BBC Radio Cymru also took part in the event during which the pupils got a taste for all things creative including devising new storylines for Pobol y Cwm and learning how to put a radio programme together.

Lisa Lewis Head of Drama at the Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural said, “The aim of the day was to inspire young people and to demonstrate the range of careers open to them in the creative industries if they want to work through the mediums of both Welsh and English.

“At ATRiuM we currently offer a bilingual drama course and will soon be offering both media and music as bilingual pathways.

The University of Glamorgan is at the forefront of developing bilingual courses in the creative industries in Wales and we hope that many of the pupils who visited the new campus will go on to study here in the future.”

The University is running a competition for Welsh speaking applicants applying this year. Students are required to submit a portfolio of work through the medium of Welsh and could win one of four prizes of £1500.

Welsh Music Foundation to inspire and guide those starting out in the business

Tuesday 4 March, 4.30pm – 6.30pm, Atrium, Adam Street, Cardiff.

The Cure-Just Like Heaven

Welsh Music Foundation is holding a careers event at University of Glamorgan’s School of Creative & Cultural Industries, the Atrium on 4 March 2008.

Aimed specifically at those who are interested in working in the music industry - from technicians to talent scouts, composers to concert promoters - Welsh Music Foundation, along with guest speakers working in the Welsh music business will be offering free advice and answering questions.

Real-life accounts, tips on how to succeed and ideas on how to get started will all be covered. Drinks will also be available after the session.

So, if you have a passion to work in the industry, are starting your own business or simply fancy a change of career, this is for you!

Who Will Be the Next Welsh Stereophonics? ATRiuM and Roland Launch Music Academy 'Battle of the Bands' with more than £3,000 Prizes

Dear colleague,

Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries and Roland UK have come together to launch ‘The Music Academy’.

The Academy’s aim is to implement the delivery of world-class music training both nationally and internationally, throughout the national qualifications framework.

Courses will be available on a both part-time and full-time basis, along with short and professional courses written in conjunction with Roland.

To launch this partnership The Music Academy is pleased to announce the inaugural ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition sponsored by Rockschool.

The competition will be held at the award winning ATRiuM in Central Cardiff on Saturday 5th April 2008, where the short-listed bands will perform live before the general public and a team of industry experts.

The Battle of the Bands showcase will also feature a number of master classes run by industry professionals and will be open to the general public.

The winning act on the 5th April will receive £3000 worth of Roland equipment plus three days recording time in one of the state-of-the-art ATRiuM recording studios.

In addition there will be cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed acts in the competition courtesy of our sponsors Rockschool.

To enter the competition, the bands must comply with the following criteria:

1) Be aged 16 – 25
2) Submit a 2/3 track demonstration recording either on CD or via a URL link to a social network site e.g. My Space.
3) Be able to perform the demonstration music tracks live at the Battle of the Bands final on the 5th April.

The demo CD/URL link along with a completed application form should be submitted to Dr. Paul Carr (Head of The Music Academy) by no later than Wednesday 5th March.

The eight short listed finalists will be then be notified by no later than Friday 14th March in order to allow time to prepare for the final competition.

Due to the large number of entries expected for the competition, any bands that have not received notification by Friday 14th March should presume that their application has been unsuccessful.

BBC Composer John Hardy to speak at the Cardiff ATRiuM:

An accomplished composer of music in all media and across all genres John has written original music for over 140 dramas, documentaries and features, which have been seen all over the world, and broadcast in the UK on all networks.

He has composed for BBC Radio dramas, various composer-in-education schemes, for theatre and for dance companies. There have been commissions for orchestra, chamber music, song cycles, choirs, chamber operas and community opera, commissioned by the Arts Councils of England and of Wales, the National Lottery, the BBC, Welsh National Opera and the Welsh Proms, among others.

Robert Redford’s world-renowned Sundance Film Festival has selected a film backed by the Wales Creative IP Fund to screen in competition in its premiere documentary strand next week.

‘In Prison My Whole Life’, directed by Cardiff film director Marc Evans and part-financed by the Wales Creative IP Fund, will be shown to a key audience at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

The docu-film focuses on William Francome and his investigation into the trial of radical journalist and former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Abu-Jamal claims to have been wrongly convicted of the murder of a police officer and remains on Pennsylvania’s death row awaiting re-trial or the death sentence.

Twenty-five year old Francome, who was born on the same night Abu-Jamal was arrested, interviews key people involved in the events leading up to the murder, including Mumia himself, along with Snoop Dog, Mos Def, Noam Chomsky and Steve Earle.

The production was produced by Livia Firth, alongside her husband, the actor Colin Firth, as executive producer. The film was launched simultaneously at the London and Rome film festivals in October last year.

The £7 million Wales Creative IP Fund, managed by Finance Wales on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government, provides equity investment for feature films, television productions, new media and music projects.

“To have a film chosen to be screened at the Sundance Film Festival is a wonderful accolade,” said Linda James, Wales Creative IP Fund Manager.

“The production has already received praise following its joint premiere in London and Rome and we can expect further acclaim at Sundance.

More importantly for us, it will showcase the work of the IP Fund and the strength of Wales’ creative industries to a high profile audience in the US.”

The IP Fund has now invested more than £5million into nine films, three television productions, a new media project and two factual documentaries since its inception in May 2005.

The IP Fund has invested £1.3million into its three latest deals which include two feature films and a TV production.

'Abraham’s Point', a drama feature starring Mackenzie Crook of ‘The Office’ and ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ fame.

The film was written by Welsh director Wyndham Price and produced by his company, Spinning Head Films which was the first company to spin out of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in April 2005.

Abraham’s Point was filmed in west Wales, the Brecon Beacons and Cardiff.

The IP Fund has also invested in a second series of the popular S4C animation series, ‘Hana’s Helpline’.

'Hana’s Helpine 2' is produced by Cardiff-based Calon and will be co-financed by S4C, Channel Five and the Gaelic Media Service.

The third recent investment is into the feature horror ‘The Daisy Chain’ directed by Aisling Walsh and starring Samantha Morton, who starred in ‘Minority Report’ opposite Tom Cruise, and Woody Allen’s ‘Sweet and Low Down’.

Steven Mackintosh stars alongside Samantha, and his accolades include a string of film and television productions, including ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ and ‘The Land Girls’.

The University of Glamorgan, Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI) at the ATRiuM in historic Cardiff central, the capital city of Wales, announces on-going careers workshops for film and media students.

Open Lecture 2008: The Art of Slapstick

An illustrated talk on the comic genius of Chaplin, Keaton and Harold Lloyd to be delivered by our guest speaker; the film historian Dave Berry.

The event will take place in the auditorium (CB 205) from 3.00 to 6.00 on the 21st of February.

Dave Berry has one of the most comprehensive approaches to Early Cinema in the British Isles, with a vast knowledge of both key and obscure details about the development of cinema in Britain.

Not only this, but Dave possesses a solid general knowledge of Hollywood and as such he can give historic meaning to how British film fits into the larger picture of films and movie-making since the very beginning of this mass media.

He's lively and animated and loves his topic -- a fascinating and entertaining speaker.

The public is invited and anyone can attend this FREE lecture, supported byt the University of Glamorgan.

Please come early, seating is limited.

Woods & Clark are ATRiuM's Doctoral Pioneers -- First CCI Ph.D.'s to Graduate Since Faculty Move to Welsh Capital

A belated Llongyfarchiadau / Congratulations to the first two recipients of the degree 'Doctor of Philosophy'(PH.D.) to graduate since the Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries Faculty has moved into their new University of Glamorgan ATRiuM arts & media complex located in the center of Cardiff, the capital of Wales.

Phil Clark has an outstanding reputation as a director with several of his Sherman Theatre Company productions, such as Under Milk Wood, Boy and A Taste of Honey, having visited the theatre in the past.

Born and brought up in Brecon, Phil trained at the Rose Bruford School of Speech and Drama and Durham University.

He was a founder member of Powys Theatre Company and Bruvvers Theatre Company in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

In the eighties he was Director of Theatre in Education and Community Theatre at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Phil was appointed Artistic Director of The Sherman Theatre in 1990.

Dr. Phil Clark is the artistic director at Cardiff's Sherman Theatre, and is hailed as a visionary for the Welsh Theatre. He's quoted in a recent article about his plans for the Sherman:

Over 90 new plays have been commissioned and staged at the Sherman since 1990, many of them geared towards the interests and concerns of a younger audience.

The Sherman Theatre Company have won awards for their special Christmas shows staged for the under seven's, as well half-hour dramas, which have later transferred to television and radio.

With the advent of the National Assembly, Phil Clark is hoping to develop further the profile of Welsh drama in the capital city, building on a far-reaching network of cultural practitioners, including directors such as Michael Bogdanov, Katie Mitchell, and Jude Kelly.

"Over the next few years, there is a golden opportunity to put the Sherman at the forefront of producing houses in Wales," Phil Clark adds.

Over the next 10 years, Phil Clark wants to build a production base that will attract the same kind of interest as Dublin's Abbey Theatre, or Glasgow's Tron Theatre.

There are already plans for a major new writing project linking Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as each of these nations embarks on far-reaching political and social changes; a scheme to promote the training of young directors; and further collaborations with the BBC, as well as Welsh independent television companies.

"A new nation is being created and we should be there putting our perspective across in as many ways as possible. We need to invest in what we have here - and it is a considerable bank of talent - but we should also look to the international stage. These are exciting times."

The Sherman -- the play's the thing...

Mark Leslie Woods, in recognition of a programme of work entitled, "An evaluation of the national cinema of Wales and whether this cinema constructs of represents a National Identity".

The programme of work was carried out under the direction and supervision of Professor Steve Blandford, Dr Lisa Lewis and Mr Ieuan Morris, Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries.

Dr. Mark Leslie Woods recently received his Ph.D. in Film Studies from the Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries, at the University of Glamorgan located in Cardiff, Wales (27 June 2007).

He is currently completing a Postgraduate Teaching Certificate in Higher Education, also at the University of Glamorgan.

For the past four years he has lectured part-time in Film & Media Studies in Pontypridd and Cardiff. He is an adult Welsh language learner since 2003.

Dr. Woods previously earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies, with a Film Studies Certificate, from Florida International University in Miami, Florida.

Dr. Woods also studied Film Production Technology at Miami-Dade College School of Entertainment Technologies.

Prior to this he completed a 4-year program in Theatre, Radio & Television at the Malone College Evangelical Friends University (Quaker) in Canton, Ohio, but did not graduate.

Dr. Woods formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Independent Feature Project/Miami.

He has previously served as an Intern Marketing Assistant for the Miami International Film Festival, and he was formerly on the Board of Directors of the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.

He spent two summers teaching undergraduate Karlovy Vary International Film Festival-related study abroad film courses in Miami and Prague, Czech Republic.

Dr. Woods and his family have made their home in Miami Beach since 1982.

He is originally from an English and Welsh-descended family that were involved in the settlement and building of a Welsh-speaking community in the 1860s in Ohio, and who comprised several of the original founding members of the Youngstown, Ohio Welsh Congregational Chapel.

Professor Steve Blandford was Director of Studies for both scholars receiving their doctorates from the ATRiuM.

Professor Blandford's research interests include British Film, theatre and television, New writing for stage, screen and radio, Screen performance, Media and performance in small nations, and his current research activity includes Screen and performance culture in small nations.

Cardiff’s Most Exciting Campus Opens

The UK’s hottest new hub for the training of tomorrow’s creative industry professionals was officially launched by a host of well-known faces at a glittering event in Cardiff last week, 29th November 2007.

‘ATRiuM’ is the name for the building which is the city centre home to the University of Glamorgan’s Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries.

The new School brings together the creative disciplines within the University of Glamorgan, including Art & Design, Media & Communication and Drama & Music.

Celebrities and leading professionals from across the creative industries were guests on the red carpet for the launch event which will showcase the state-of-the-art building.

The evening was compered by actress Sian Phillips and presenter Rhodri Owen who took guests through an evening packed with entertainment.

Performances were given by well-known harpist Catrin Finch and vocalists Elin Manahan and Daisy Blue who was accompanied on the piano by her father Mal Pope.

Professor Peter Robertson who is the Dean of the new faculty commented, “This high-tech teaching environment provides undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree programmes and will be the largest single university initiative for the creative and cultural industries in the UK.”

Also joining in the celebration was the faculty’s new board of visiting Professors which include some of the biggest names in the creative industries.

This advisory board, headed by industrial designer, Professor Nick Butler OBE, will be made up of actor Daniel Evans, composer Karl Jenkins, animator Robin Lyons, film director Marc Evans and theatre director Terry Hands. Profiles

Messages of support from actors Matthew Rhys and Jonathan Pryce and Welsh band The Lost Prophets were read on the evening.

The multi-million pound facility stands as an architectural icon in the city, as well as a platform for a mix of teaching and research in the theory and practice of media, design and cultural studies.

As well as high-tech teaching and learning spaces and facilities, academics and practitioners from a broad range of subject areas work together in an exciting environment geared to sharing expertise.

Professor Peter Robertson added, “This Faculty is a major development for Wales and the UK and has attracted enormous interest from the media industry, arts and cultural organisations.

Both the Faculty and the campus are being seen as a focus for the creative industries in Wales and we will be producing the professionals of the future to work in these economic growth sectors.”

Some facts about the building:

- The ATRiuM is a £35 million development. It is a 5 storey, 10,500 square metre facility.
– It is a faculty for approx 2000 students and 120 staff.
– The building contains a cinema, TV, radio and film production facilities, design studios, theatre and performance spaces, photography and journalism spaces, animation studios and computer labs.

In 1927 Igor Stravinsky debutted the staged grand opera version of Oedipus rex. This constituted an example of Neo-classicism in the arts, and it's in this same vein that dramatists Jodie Allinson and Michael Carklin, headquartered in Cardiff, the Welsh capital city and an emerging British lively arts centre of innovation and activity, have written and are staging an exciting new piece for audiences.

Tickets cost £4.50 or £3.00 concession (CCI staff eligible for concession).

The University of Glamorgan, Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries announces an exciting new theatrical production 'King Oedipus' in the new arts centre called the 'ATRiuM'.

‘ATRiuM’ is the name for the building which is the city centre home to the University of Glamorgan’s Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries.

The new School brings together the creative disciplines within the University of Glamorgan, including Art & Design, Media & Communication and Drama & Music.

Dear Colleagues

Our students will be presenting a production of King Oedipus on the evenings of 6, 7, 8 and 9 February starting at 7.30pm here at the ATRiuM.

The production is co-directed by Jodie Allinson and me. Using the ancient Greek and ancient Roman versions of the play (by Sophocles and Seneca) as a starting point, we hope that this will be an intriguing, challenging and satisfying journey for the audience, exploring the story of Oedipus who, in trying to escape a prophecy that he will kill his father and marry his mother, discovers that he has inadvertently done just that.

King Oedipus, first performed around 2400 years ago, is widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of western drama and this production has offered drama students a stimulating opportunity to practically explore the production of this play for a contemporary audience.

Glamorgan Islamic Society proudly presents Abdur Raheem Green for the first time in Wales.

Lanky, blonde, green-eyed, 33-years-old Abdur Rahim Green appears to be a character straight out of a Hollywood movie Ben Hur.

• He was born to British parents in Darussalam in Tanzania in 1964.

• He was educated at a famous Roman Catholic Monastic School called Ampleforth College and went on to study history in the London University. However, he left his education unfinished.
• He was dissatisfied with Christianity since the age of eight.

• He was practising Buddhism for nearly three years though he never formally embraced it.

• His study of the Noble Qur’an immediately attracted him to Islam and he embraced Islam in 1988. He has been a Daw’ah practitioner in Britain since then.

• He wears a look that instantly evokes comparison with the popular portrayal of the Prophet Jesus (Pbuh) in the imagery of Christian Europe.

• He has two wives, both British-born Muslims of Indian origin and six children.

• Currently, he is working with an Islamic media company based in England and engages himself in da’wah activities including lectures on Islam in London’s famous Hyde Park. He is well known for his efforts at the renowned "Speaker’s Corner" in London’s Hyde Park.

• He also delivers talks and lectures for Muslims, and concentrates on the pure teaching to the say of Prophet Muhammad (May God’s peace and blessing be upon him), and the early Muslims.

Cardiff ATRiuM Debuts Live Theatre Feb. 6-9 with King Oedipus co-directed by Jodie Allinson and Michael Carklin

In 1927 Igor Stravinsky debutted the staged grand opera version of Oedipus rex. This constituted an example of Neo-classicism in the arts, and it's in this same vein that dramatists Jodie Allinson and Michael Carklin, headquartered in Cardiff, the Welsh capital city and an emerging British lively arts centre of innovation and activity, have written and are staging an exciting new piece for audiences.

Cardiff’s Most Exciting Campus Opens

November 28, 2007

The UK’s hottest new hub for the training of tomorrow’s creative industry professionals was officially launched by a host of well-known faces at a glittering event in Cardiff last week, 29th November 2007.

‘ATRiuM’ is the name for the building which is the city centre home to the University of Glamorgan’s Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries.

The new School brings together the creative disciplines within the University of Glamorgan, including Art & Design, Media & Communication and Drama & Music.

Celebrities and leading professionals from across the creative industries were guests on the red carpet for the launch event which will showcase the state-of-the-art building.

The evening was compered by actress Sian Phillips and presenter Rhodri Owen who took guests through an evening packed with entertainment.

Performances were given by well-known harpist Catrin Finch and vocalists Elin Manahan and Daisy Blue who was accompanied on the piano by her father Mal Pope.

Professor Peter Robertson who is the Dean of the new faculty commented, “This high-tech teaching environment provides undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree programmes and will be the largest single university initiative for the creative and cultural industries in the UK.”

Also joining in the celebration was the faculty’s new board of visiting Professors which include some of the biggest names in the creative industries.

This advisory board, headed by industrial designer, Professor Nick Butler OBE, will be made up of actor Daniel Evans, composer Karl Jenkins, animator Robin Lyons, film director Marc Evans and theatre director Terry Hands. Profiles

Messages of support from actors Matthew Rhys and Jonathan Pryce and Welsh band The Lost Prophets were read on the evening.

The multi-million pound facility stands as an architectural icon in the city, as well as a platform for a mix of teaching and research in the theory and practice of media, design and cultural studies.

As well as high-tech teaching and learning spaces and facilities, academics and practitioners from a broad range of subject areas work together in an exciting environment geared to sharing expertise.

Professor Peter Robertson added, “This Faculty is a major development for Wales and the UK and has attracted enormous interest from the media industry, arts and cultural organisations.

Both the Faculty and the campus are being seen as a focus for the creative industries in Wales and we will be producing the professionals of the future to work in these economic growth sectors.”

Some facts about the building:

- The ATRiuM is a £35 million development. It is a 5 storey, 10,500 square metre facility.
– It is a faculty for approx 2000 students and 120 staff.
– The building contains a cinema, TV, radio and film production facilities, design studios, theatre and performance spaces, photography and journalism spaces, animation studios and computer labs.

Cardiff ATRiuM Scholars Publish Exciting New Journal of Adaptation in Film and Performance

Dear Colleagues:

The first issue of this new Journal of Adaptation in Film and Performance has just been published by Intellect.

It is edited by Richard Hand and Katja Krebs with the help of Martha Minier and marks a step forward for Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries (CCI/ATRiuM) in having an internationally refereed journal coming out of the faculty.

This is a fantastic achievement and is recognition of CCI/ATRiuM's growing stature in this field of research.

Adaptation, or the conversion of oral, historical or fictional narratives into stage drama has been common practice for centuries.

In our own time the processes of cross-generic transformation continue to be extremely important in theatre as well as in the film and other media industries.

Adaptation and the related areas of translation and intertextuality continue to have a central place in our culture with a profound resonance across our civilisation.

Aims and Scope:

Adaptation in the form of the conversion of oral, historical or fictional narratives into stage drama has been common practice for centuries.

In our own time the processes of cross-generic transformation continue to be extremely important in theatre as well as in the film and other media industries.

Adaptation and the related areas of translation and intertextuality continue to have a central place in our culture with a profound resonance across our civilisation.

As an academic discipline, Adaptation Studies has begun to establish itself in the last few decades as an important area of scholarship and research which continues to make significant contributions to our analysis and understanding of a complex and increasingly diverse world culture.

Journal of Adaptation in Film & Performance is a new, peer- reviewed journal designed to engage with specific issues relating to performance on stage, film, television, radio and other media.

Embracing comfortably these disciplines under the umbrella of adaptation theories and practices, it attempts to challenge widespread views of national cultural histories and global constructions of performance culture by analysing methods, histories and occurrences of adaptation across a range of media.

We would like to invite contributions that offer historical, theoretical or practice- based considerations and discussions of adaptation in performance in the context of one of the following topics:

Translation as adaptation / Theatre /
Film / Television / Radio / Gaming /
Graphic narratives
Submission Details

To submit to future editions, please, send your completed papers (4,000 – 6,000 words) accompanied by a short CV to the editors Richard Hand and Katja Krebs.

If you would like to discuss any specific proposals before submitting a completed paper, please contact the editors.

Short ‘Notes and Comments’ contributions (up to 1000 words) that facilitate debate and exchange will also be considered.

Translating the City: A Community Theatre Version of Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire in Newcastle-upon-Tyne

It has been estimated that an overwhelming percentage of Welsh films and television dramas are intentionally based upon other literary sources.

This overwhelming dependence upon literary adaptation is primarily from important Welsh literary or cultural sources.

This suggests an attempt to ‘recall and recollect’ and to re-‘write the nation’, after a period of suppressed or neglected representations of Welsh-ness.

While Dave Berry’s book and other studies have attributed this Welsh dependence upon literary adaptation as ‘laziness’ (Berry 1994: 234), we see it as being related to issues of post-colonial ‘re-telling’ of a national story, or more related to the economics of production.

For example, Stephen Bayly directed Joni Jones (1982) as a well-received television series for S4C, an adaptation based upon the well-known children’s stories by R. Garallt Jones entitled Gwared y Gwirion or ‘Redemption of the Innocents’.

It is often the case in Wales, that directors will create a series which is actually suited to be converted into a feature film at a later date, should the funding and political will be present to effect the re-formatting.

Additionally, one of Wales's most famous sons is Andrew Davies, who is known around the world as the 'Prince of Adaptation'.

Andrew Wynford Davies (born September 20, 1936 in Rhiwbina, Cardiff, Wales) is a British screenwriter.

He is the creator of the children's Marmalade Atkins television series and A Very Peculiar Practice, and is also well known for his adaptations of classic works of literature, including the 1995 television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle and the 1998 adaptation of Vanity Fair.

Literary and stage adaptations have added clout with film production investors, who assume that a successful novel or stage play will naturally make a successful film.

Some screenwriters have been known to 'invent' a novel AFTER writing a film script, for purposes of marketing the film, and for raising venture capital.

In small nations, broadcasting drama department Commissioning Editors often opt for an adaptation. This satisfies several remits: nationalistic and cultural agendas are fulfilled, while it's assumed that an established audience exists for the new film or TV series.

My favorite book on film and literature in general is Tom Corrigan's 'Film & Literature' (1999, Prentic Hall Inc / Simon & Schuster).

'Adaptation: Studying Film and Literature' (Paperback) by John Desmond (Author), Peter Hawkes (Author) is concise and readable new text for courses in Film Adaptation or Film and Literature introduces students to the art of adapting works of literature for film.

'Adaptation' describes the interwoven histories of literature and film, presents key analytical approaches to adaptation, and provides an in-depth overview of adaptations of novels, short stories, plays, nonfiction, and animation.

The book concludes with an analysis of why adaptations sometimes fail.

Tony Platt’s career in the music business started at Trident Studios in London but he made his name as an engineer at the now legendary Island Studios.

Working his way from assistant engineer to engineer on sessions with the likes of Free, Traffic, The Who, Rolling Stones, Sutherland Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Jess Roden and Mott the Hoople to he came to engineer albums for a hitherto unknown Jamaican artist, Bob Marley, which would launch reggae music into the mainstream for good.

This association led him to complete ”Funky Kingston” for Toots and the Maytals and work with several other notable Jamaican artists such as ZapPow, Lorna Bennet, Harry J’s All Stars, Aswad and The Cimarons.

However, although Tony Platt’s reputation is principally based on his work in the world of rock, at Island he gained other more eclectic experience working on the numerous orchestral, commercial and pop sessions that came through the studio and some fairly eccentric projects including a 30 piece avant garde jazz band and an album consisting entirely of Tibetan bells !

After working with the various spin off projects from the recently disbanded Free - Sharks, Toby, Peace and Kossoff, Kirke,Tetsu and Rabbit and as engineer for Muff Winwood on the debut Sparks album Kimono in my House he finally left Island and turned freelance.

Having recorded demos that prefaced deals for Thin Lizzy and the Stranglers he became engineer for Mutt Lange.

With Mutt, Tony worked on the AC/DC albums Highway to Hell and Back in Black, Foreigner - 4, Boomtown Rats - Fine Art of Surfacing and Broken Home and AC/DC asked him to mix the soundtrack on their documentary film and then to work with them on Flick of the Switch.

When he joined the Zomba producer roster in 1980 Tony enjoyed immediate success producing and engineering the work of artists such as Samson (with Bruce Dickenson singing) & Iron Maiden, Krokus, Motorhead, Gary Moore, Cheap Trick, The Cult, Marillion , the list goes on.

The Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries has moved from the University's Treforest campus to our new ATRiuM home in Cardiff city centre.

Public Lecture on Small-Nation Filmmaking by Professor Mette Hjort, 5.30pm Weds 28th November 2007

Distinguished academic Professor Mette Hjort will be speaking at ATRiuM on Wednesday 28th November. In her only public appearance in Wales, Professor Hjort will deliver a lecture on The ‘Advance Party’ Initiative: Scottish/Danish Solutions to the Problems of Small-Nation Filmmaking.

‘Advance Party’ is a Scottish Dogme project which sets out to do for Scotland what director Lars von Trier’s Dogme 95 had done for Denmark. Professor Hjort will examine how this unique model of transnational filmmaking helps to provide solutions to the problems of small-nation filmmaking.

Distinguished academic Professor Mette Hjort will be speaking at ATRiuM at 5.30pm Weds 28th November. In her only public talk in Wales, Professor Hjort will deliver a lecture on The 'Advance Party' Initiative: Scottish/Danish Solutions to the Problems of Small-Nation Filmmaking.

'Advance Party' is a Scottish Dogme project which sets out to do for Scotland what director Lars von Trier's Dogme 95 had done for Denmark. Professor Hjort will examine how this unique model of transnational filmmaking helps to provide solutions to the problems of small-nation filmmaking.

Professor Hjort is the Leverhulme Visiting Professor of Film Studies at St Andrews in Scotland and Professor of Visual Studies at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. She has published Small Nations, Global Cinema, and co-edited volumes including The Cinema of Small Nations, Cinema and Nation, The Postnational Self and Purity and Provocation: Dogme 95.

About one of the newest books by Professor Mette, The Cinema of Small Nations:

Synopsis: Within cinema studies there has emerged a significant body of scholarship on the idea of 'National Cinema' but there has been a tendency to focus on the major national cinemas.

Less developed within this field is the analysis of what we might term minor or small national cinemas, despite the increasing significance of these small entities with the international domain of moving image production, distribution and consumption.

"The Cinema of Small Nations" is the first major analysis of small national cinemas, comprising twelve case studies of small national - and sub national - cinemas from around the world, including Ireland, Denmark, Iceland, Scotland, Bulgaria, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Cuba, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

Written by an array of distinguished and emerging scholars, each of the case studies provides a detailed analysis of the particular cinema in question, with an emphasis on the last decade, considering both institutional and textual issues relevant to the national dimension of each cinema.

While each chapter contains an in-depth analysis of the particular cinema in question, the book as a whole provides the basis for a broader and more properly comparative understanding of small or minor national cinemas, particularly with regard to structural constraints and possibilities, the impact of globalization and internationalisation, and the role played by economic and cultural factors in small-nation contexts.

This book includes the first major study of a range of small national cinemas. It provides detailed and informative studies of particular small national cinemas from around the globe.

It features an implicit comparative element that reveals major similarities and differences across the case studies.

It also features a strong line up of international contributors including a number of major internationally recognised experts in the field.

It is written in an accessible style to appeal to students, academics and the general reader alike.

Dazzling Washington, D.C. Smithsonian Welsh Cultural Event in July 2009 Sparks National Interest with Millions of Pounds Potential Economic Benefits

"The best of Welsh heads to the States"

The best of Welsh culture will be on show at a major Washington D.C festival held during Independence Day celebrations in 2009.

The annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival will see over 100 Welsh artists, performers and cultural scholars cross the Atlantic to take part.

The Festival is a complex production, over the years drawing on the research and presentational skills of more than 1,000 folklorists, cultural anthropologists, ethnomusicologists, and numerous other academic and lay scholars.

Its production involves the expertise of hundreds of technical staff, the efforts of volunteers, and the backing of sponsors and supporters.

Some observers have noted that the involvement of the Welsh Assembly Government, the numerous Welsh scholars and perfomers, the travel and hospitality, event planning and marketing programmes and staff, and the expected operating budget budgets related to this project imply MILLIONS of DOLLARS in necessary expenses along with the potential of MILLIONS of POUNDS in long-term tourism and economic benefit to Wales after the event.

Understandably the news of this event is travelling quickly, and many folks in Wales are beginning to wonder how they can contribute to or benefit from this project.

Members of the Welsh-North American Expatriate, 'Diaspora' and Welsh-descended organisations and scholarly groups are said to be hoping to participate and benefit as well.

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is an international exposition of living cultural heritage annually produced outdoors on the National Mall of the United States in Washington, D.C., by the Smithsonian Institution's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.

The Festival takes place for two weeks every summer overlapping the Fourth of July holiday.

It is an educational presentation that features community-based cultural exemplars.

Free to the public, like other Smithsonian museums, each Festival typically draws more than one million visitors.

Initiated in 1967, the Festival has become a national and international model of a research-based presentation of contemporary living cultural traditions.

Over the years, it has brought more than 23,000 musicians, artists, performers, craftspeople, workers, cooks, storytellers, and others to the National Mall to demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and aesthetics that embody the creative vitality of community-based traditions.

Wales has been chosen as the featured nation for the 10-day event, which regularly attracts over one million visitors.

But this clearly understates the potential benefit of a newly 'energized' American 'connection' with Wales. For example, the Smithsonian Folklife Centre reports that:

"As the largest annual cultural event in the U.S. capital, the Festival receives considerable publicity, typically reaching 40 million readers and viewers through print and electronic media."

"In the past, the Festival was named the Top Event in the U.S. by the American Bus Association as a result of a survey of regional tourist bureaus—thus joining previous winners that include the Olympics and the World Expo."

"The Festival has also been the subject of numerous books, documentary films, scholarly articles, and debate."

Some skeptical observers have been asking in blogs and discussions, "Is Wales going to be ready for this event, or will a golden, once-in-a-century opportunity be missed for the nation of Wales?"

The Smithsonian has written about the festival's impact upon foreign domestic markets, that:

"The Festival has strong impacts on policies, scholarship, and folks "back home."

"Many states and several nations have remounted Festival programs locally and used them to generate laws, institutions, educational programs, books, documentary films, recordings, museum and traveling exhibitions."

"In many cases, the Festival has energized local and regional tradition bearers and their communities, and thus helped to conserve and create cultural resources."

On November 5th, 2007 the Assembly spokeman reported in a news release that:

"Representatives from the Smithsonian Institution will be in Cardiff today [ 5 November] to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Assembly Government to confirm the Welsh presence at the 2009 Festival."

"They will also meet First Minister Rhodri Morgan to discuss plans for the event. . ."

The event celebrates the cultural traditions of communities across the United States and around the world. It showcases the best of community-based arts and highlights the importance of heritage to communities.

The Welsh Assembly Government will lead the development of in building of the programme for Wales, which will demonstrate the wealth of cultural history and traditions in Wales. As well as the cultural activities, the Welsh Assembly Government will use this festival to target its international audience to maximise economic opportunities for Wales.

The Welsh Assembly Government will be working closely with partners throughout Wales to build a dynamic programme of performance, demonstration, and discussion events.

The participation of the Welsh Assembly Governemt in this Smithsonian initiative seems to complement and support the 'Assembly Government’s vision for Wales as a confident, diverse, creative and physically fit nation.'

The Welsh Assembly Goverment has published related statements declaring 'our intention is to raise the profile of Wales and stamp our unique identity on the world stage'.

In a related story, on Wednesday 14th November, a diverse group of arts and cultural practitioners and academics met at the new University of Glamorgan, Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries complex called the ATRiuM on Adam Street in the Cardiff City Centre to address the symposium theme through a series of focused conversations and group exercises.

These discussions were set within the context of what is now a key economic sector, the creative and cultural industries.

Presenting at this event was the ATRiuM / Smithsonian Institution Visiting Fellow, Folklorist Dr Betty Belanus.

Dr. Belanus is Curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, and has joined the Centre as a Visiting Research Fellow and is undertaking preparatory work for the Smithsonian Festival's focus on Wales in 2009.

Since arriving, Dr Belanus has been engaged in an active period of fieldwork which has also involved consultative planning visits around Wales.

The ATRiuM has been fortunate to have Dr Betty Belanus, Curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, as a participant at this symposium.

Dr Belanus is currently a Visiting Research Fellow with the Centre for the Study of Media and Culture in Small Nations.

Key Players from the Welsh Higher Education, Welsh Tourism, National Gallery and National Museums, and Arts and Media sectors attended this crucial and timely ATRiuM symposium and participated in the discussions.

Keen interest was show toward all the presentations, although the events related to the upcoming Smithsonian 2009 event attracted animated and intense questions and comment.

Concerns were raised that Wales carefully considers and plans the nation's participation in this upcoming event in 2009, so that the broadest variety of sector in Welsh society and the Welsh economy benfit from this project, both before, during and after the event.

The Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage is a research and educational unit of the Smithsonian Institution promoting the understanding and continuity of diverse, contemporary grassroots cultures in the United States and around the world.

The Center produces the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, Smithsonian Global Sound, exhibitions, documentary films and videos, symposia, publications, and educational materials.

The Center conducts ethnographic and cultural heritage policy oriented research, maintains the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections, and provides educational and research opportunities through fellowships, internships, and training programs.

The Center also produces major national cultural events consistent with its mission.

In 2004 these included the National World War II Reunion and the First Americans Festival for the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian.

The Center's activities are funded by federal appropriations, Smithsonian trust funds, contracts and agreements with national, state, and local governments, foundation grants, gifts from individuals and corporations, income from the Festival, and Folkways product sales.

The Center's experienced staff is culturally diverse and extremely productive, combining interdisciplinary scholars with technical specialists. The Center has distinguished advisors and cooperates with numerous international, state, local, and professional organizations.
